  • New Zealand Government
    The New Zealand Government website provides a portal for public sector and local government organisations.
  • Securities Commission
    The Securities Commission is a statutory corporation which, in all matters other than funding and the appointment of members, is expected to act independently of the New Zealand Government and others. Its purpose is to strengthen confidence in New Zealand's capital markets and thereby foster capital investment in the country.   • Occupational Health and Safety Service (OSH)
    OSH is part of the Department of Labour and is the agency responsible for enforcing workplace health and safety legislation and especially the Health and Safety in Employment Act (available at http://www.legislation.govt.nz/).
  • Maritime Safety Authority
    The Maritime Safety Authority is a Crown agency whose principal objectives are to undertake activities that promote a safe maritime environment and provide marine pollution prevention and a marine oil pollution response system.
  • Civil Aviation Authority
    The CAA establishes and enforces civil aviation safety and security standards related to the civil aviation industry. It investigates accidents and incidents and compiles statistics that are used in safety campaigns and monitoring and regulatory action. The CAA also provides search and rescue services throughout New Zealand and the South Pacific, and meets New Zealand's obligations to the international civil aviation community.
  • Land Transport New Zealand
    The objective of Land Transport NZ is to contribute to an integrated, safe, responsive and sustainable land transport system. This is achieved by working with central, regional and local government and other stakeholders to help develop land transport solutions.
  • Environmental Risk Management Authority
    The Environmental Risk Management Authority (ERMA) makes decisions on applications to introduce hazardous substances or new organisms, including genetically modified organisms, under the Hazardous Substances and New Organisms Act. The site provides information about the decision-making process and outcomes.
  • Energy Safety Service
    The Energy Safety Service deals with energy-related safety matters and is based in the Ministry of Economic Development.
  • New Zealand Fire Service
    New Zealand has a unified national fire service with headquarters in Wellington. The site provides information about the service and has links to related sites.
  • Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management
    The Ministry is responsible for national civil defence and emergency management arrangements set out in the Civil Defence & Emergency Management Act (available at http://www.legislation.govt.nz/).
    The Ministry provides a National Crisis Management Centre from which the government can operate crisis management arrangements. New Zealand is exposed to significant natural hazards that require the centre to be in a continued state of readiness.
  • Accident Compensation Corporation
    The Accident Compensation Corporation (ACC) administers New Zealand's accident compensation scheme which provides 24-hour no-fault personal accident insurance cover for all New Zealand citizens, residents and temporary visitors to New Zealand. In return people do not have the right to sue for personal injury, other than for exemplary damages. The site provides information about the history of the scheme and how to make a claim.

    This website provides free access to New Zealand statutes (Public, Local, and Private Acts) and Statutory Regulations.

  • New Zealand Stock Exchange
    The New Zealand Stock Exchange sets listing rules, including those related to corporate governance for listed companies; the rules are published on their website.
  • Mountain Safety Council
    The Council is an incorporated society that was formed in 1966 in response to a growing concern over an increasing number of accidents in the bush and mountains; its goal is improving safety in outdoor adventure activities. The Council now has 28 branches, 1000 volunteer instructors and 17 member organisations.
  • Insurance Council of New Zealand (ICNZ)
    ICNZ is an industry organisation representing fire and general insurers. The site lists the ICNZ members and provides links to their websites. For information about insurance company ratings, visit the Ministry of Economic Development website page at http://www.isu.govt.nz.
  • Lifelines
    Lifeline utilities provide crucial services before and after major disasters such as earthquakes or floods. Information about lifelines and links to lifeline groups are on the Ministry of Civil Defence & Emergency Management website.

  • Institute of Geological and Nuclear Sciences (IGNS)
    IGNS is a Crown-owned research company that provides research, information and publications on earthquake and volcanic hazards and geological resources.
  • National Institute of Water and Atmospheric Research (NIWA)
    NIWA is a Crown-owned research company specialising in providing atmospheric and aquatic science research, information and publications.
  • Meteorological Service
    The MetService gathers, analyses and provides weather information for the public of New Zealand, and for a wide range of domestic and foreign commercial customers. It has particular expertise in supporting the media, aviation, and energy industries, and in national meteorological service operation.

ACADEMIC ORGANISATIONS

  • Massey University
    The university offers extramural papers leading to a Diploma in Safety Management; papers on risk management are also available. The University publishes the on-line Australasian Journal of Disaster and Trauma Studies at http://www.massey.ac.nz/~trauma/.
  • Centre for Advanced Engineering (CAE)
    CAE is a not-for-profit organisation based within the School of Engineering at the University of Canterbury. It carries out research and provides training in the broad areas of engineering lifelines, risk management and energy.
  • Injury Prevention Research Unit
    The Unit uses epidemiological and social science research methods to investigate causes of injury and determine how to reduce the incidence, severity and consequences of injury in New Zealand. This research is being undertaken in the areas of road traffic, sport and recreation, child and adolescent, occupational injury, intentional injury, injury surveillance, injury to Maori and hazardous drinking. The Unit maintains national injury databases for the purpose of identifying new hazards and evaluating interventions. It also hosts NIQS, the National Injury Query System, a web-based public injury statistics service.

  • New Zealand Institute for Safety Management (NZISM)
    NZISM is a professional organisation for people who are interested or involved in the management and development of occupational health & safety. It provides government agencies with a point of contact for providers of occupational health and safety products and services. Members have access to information services, conferences, seminars, networking opportunities, training, referrals and a career path. Organisations and employers are able to use NZISM to review occupational health and safety consultants. This site also provides good links to other websites related to health and safety.
  • New Zealand Safety Council
    The NZ Safety Council Trust was established in 2002 to promote best practice in health & safety management and environmental protection in all aspects of New Zealand life. The Council maintains the New Zealand Register for safety professionals and QSA International's NZ Branch Office.
  • UK Institution of Occupational Safety and Health (IOSH)
    IOSH, Europe's leading body for health and safety professionals, represents 27,000 members in over 50 countries. An independent, not-for-profit organisation, the Institution regulates and steers the profession, maintaining standards and providing impartial, authoritative guidance on health and safety issues. While not a New Zealand website, we have posted this one as Chris Peace, Managing Director of Risk Management Limited, is a Fellow of IOSH and on the register of safety practitioners.
  • Risk Management Institution of Australasia (RMIA)
    RMIA has set itself the mission of championing the concept of risk management as a legitimate business discipline in its own right and to foster and develop risk management professionalism within industry, government, media and the community in the Asia Pacific region.
  • Institute of Risk Management (IRM)
    IRM is risk management's professional education body in the UK.
