 AS/NZS 5050:2010 Business continuity - Managing disruption-related risk

A new (June 2010) standard AS/NZS 5050:2010 Business continuity - Managing disruption-related risk has been published by Standards New Zealand and Standards Australia. It is available at Standards New Zealand.

This standard applies AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 ("Risk Management - Principles and guidelines") to the management of disruption-related risk for the purposes of helping ensure continuity of 'the business' of organisations. By approaching the issue from a risk management perspective, the new standard ensures consideration of treatments which modify either the likelihood of disruptive events or the scale of those events as well as those that address disruptive consequences (and their likelihoods). It also helps ensure that the management of disruption-related risk is integrated into the rest of the organisation's risk management efforts.

Development of this standard benefitted significantly from the public comment phase in both New Zealand and Australia. The Society played a key role in its production.  Refer to the Society's submission here.

New 31000 Risk Management Standard NOW available

The new (as from 20 November 2009) international risk management standard AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 is now available for purchase as a PDF or hardcopy from the Standards New Zealand website.

Orders for printed copies or PDF versions can be placed via the SNZ website, or to the SNZ customer services team (0800 782 632) or email.

AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 amends and supersedes AS/NZS 4360:2004.

What are people saying about the new standard?

Draft guidelines for comment - managing risk in sport and recreation

A new draft Handbook (DR HB246 Managing risk in sport and recreation) has been issued for public comment. This is a joint handbook, intended to be applicable in both New Zealand and Australia.

The handbook explains how to apply AS/NZS ISO 31000 in the sport and recreation sector and includes useful appendices about relevant law and about the interface of local government with the sport and recreation sector. A copy of the draft and the comment form can be obtained from Standards New Zealand here.

New handbook about risk management "communication and consultation"

A new joint New Zealand and Australian Handbook - HB 327:2010 Communicating and Consulting about Risk has been published this week and is available from Standards New Zealand here

Developed by the joint standards committee OB-007, HB327:2010 is a companion document to the recently released AS/NZS ISO 31000:2009 Risk management - Principles and guidelines. Drawing on academic research and practical experience, it explains the role and benefits of both communication and consultation as envisaged in theStandard, explains some of the implications and challenges, and offers guidance by way of techniques and case studies. Several members of the Society contributed to the development of the handbook.

Commenting on its decision to develop HB327:2010, the Society's representative on the OB-007 committee Roger Estall said the handbook recognises that risk management takes place in a social context. Consequently, to be effective, information and views need to be shared by people who are affected differently by a set of risks, who know different things about those risks, and who may have different views about them. "This handbook will help organisations to realise the value of undertaking effective communication and consultation at each step of the risk management process."
